Before analyzing, examining or testing a line of code from a system, I was visualizing contamination data for environmental engineering projects and drafting electrical designs in the field. I came up through engineering not through a degree but through doing the real work. Years later, I was leading QA on biometric identity systems, supporting robotics operations and working on inflight entertainment projects.
Then I started talking to small business owners. Salon owners, restaurateurs, therapists, financial consultants. And almost every conversation broke my heart a little.
"I built something I love. But I'm drowning in the stuff I never signed up to do."
One owner was manually texting 40 clients every week just to remind them about their appointments. Another rebuilt the same invoice from scratch in Excel every single time. Someone had her entire follow-up list stored in her head because she couldn't afford a real system. These weren't people who lacked ambition or skill. They were working twice as hard as they should for half the result because the tools built to help them were either too expensive, too complicated or made for companies ten times their size.
